It's been just under five years since the Portland Trail Blazer made center Greg Oden the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. On Monday, Oden is set to undergo his fifth knee surgery during those five years.

The Blazers announced on Monday that Oden will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee in Vail, CO. Oden has not appeared in an NBA game since December 2007 and there is no timetable for his return.

Monday's surgery was expected. Back on Feb. 3, Oden underwent the same arthroscopic procedure on his right knee and Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan said at the time that doctors wanted to address his left knee as well.

"He's still considered out indefinitely," Buchanan told CBSSports.com at the time. "Having this procedure on the right knee and the possibility of his left knee doesn't increase the likelihood of him playing soon."

This procedure and marks the third time Oden will have surgery on his left knee. He had left knee surgery in Dec. 2009 after fracturing his patella and he had microfracture surgery in Nov. 2010 to address an injury suffered during his rehabilitation process.

Prior to undergoing the arthroscopic procedure on his right knee earlier this month, Oden had microfracture surgery on that knee in Sept. 2007.

In a statement posted on Facebook earlier this month, Oden said he would continue his rehabilitation.

"I'm sure you've all heard the news by now that I'm having a scope on my knee today," the statement read. "Unfortunately after months of intense rehab and training, the doctors discovered that a scope is necessary at this time. Thankfully this should be a quick recovery and I'll be back to training soon. I'm committed as ever to doing everything and anything to get back on the court and be a part of the team's success."

Oden, 24, has played in 82 career NBA games, averaging 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.

15 and 15? most dominant center in the NBA? you have to be an ohio state fan. saying they have batum and don't need durant is like saying the bulls had john paxon and didn't need MJ.

oden is a clutz and made a career out of being 6 inches taller than everyone else on the court in HS and college. i don't hate on him for being injury prone, he can't help that. i hate on him for being overrated in every single way.

There is a problem here.
People hating on Oden for being a broken person, that's wrong. He wants to play, and is a great player, but is injury prone.

Yes portland passed up on kevin durant. And what has happened since then? Batum and Wallace are solid SFs, LA is one of the best PFs in the nation. Durant wouldn't fit on this team, they needed a center, they drafted Oden.

When healthy he will, if he ever plays a full season, average way above 15 pts and 15 rebounds, he would be the most dominant center in the NBA, if healthy.

Long story short, don't hate on the man because his knees are messed up. That is just wrong.

I feel very bad for Oden. I hope someday he'll have something that resembled a basketball career but you have to wonder if his knees will ever be strong enough after so much major surgury. I'm a Spurs fan, but I feel for the Blazers fans. Oden sure did seem like a great anchor to build a team around ala the Admiral, Timmy and Shaq. It's a shame for the entire NBA, I league Big Men used to rule and now seem like endangered species.

This is a pretty sad thing for Oden and the Blazers, but both in different ways. The sad thing for him is his career could already be over or if he does get a chance to play he wont be the player that people expected coming out of college. I truly hope he makes a good recovery and can end up having a decent professional career(but wont be for the Blazers). On the Blazers end they get the raw deal once again as they try to draft the size and not the player. Coming out of college both Oden and Durant were cant miss players and what they really needed was the size of Oden, since already had Roy and LA for scoring so in the thought it wasnt a bad deal, but in the end it always ends up being a bad deal for the Blazers. (also became a bad deal for the Sonics since they get Durant but then team gets hornswoggled over to Oklahoma city). Thanks Clay Bennett!!! You do see some NBA'ers play until there late 30's so I have to say there is always a chance that Oden can make a come back, but it looks as if he is still a year or two away from being that guy who could help a team if it can happen at all. Good luck to him in what path he ends up taking, but I do know he has make a butt load of money for playing basically 1 full season in his first 5 seasons in the league.

Dear Ben Golliver,
You have an error in your article...."Oden has not appeared in an NBA game since December 2007 and there is no timetable for his return."  He played in 61 games in 08-09, and 21 games in 2009-10 season. Somebody needs to proofread.

Too bad 99.99% of all people thought for sure Oden would be better than Durant. Who knows what type of player Oden would be if he even had average knees.
-----------
I must have been in that .01%.  I always thought Oden was overrated and Durant was far better.

From Walton to Bowie to Oden....the Blazers just seem to have bad luck with big men.

I don't know how unlucky they were with Walton...he at least got them an NBA Championship.
