Report: Nets cancel practice amid Harris rumors

Despite missing on Melo, trade rumors are still swirling on the southern side of the Hudson River. Ken Berger tweeted yesterday about the potential of the Nets moving point guard Devin Harris to the Trail Blazers from Andre Miller and Joel Przybilla.

And amid all that speculation, the Nets have decided to cancel practice, according to SB Nation. The Nets don't play until Friday, but according to the report, New Jersey wants to keep its players away frmo the media hounds until the Harris stuff settles one way or the other.

A wise move, but one that only accelerates rumors though. The Nets have gone through a bunch of crap during this Melodrama, and now it's all going to start over again. Then again, most everyone knows that during the trade deadline players are on the block. But you don't see everyone running out and canceling practice because of it.

Harris is one of the top chips on the market and despite being somewhat of a disappointment this season, he's still a young point guard with talent. And the Nets appear to be a team ready to roll the roster over a bit more. Their offseason acquisitions have turned out to be mostly a disaster and the team has limped to a 17-40 record.

General manager Billy King is going to be active around the deadline so he's just clearing the air so he can work a bit. If you take this as a sign a Harris deal is imminent, I wouldn't blame you.

WIn-win trade

Andre Miller has played a bit better than Devin Harris this year and his team has certainly done better in no small part thanks to Andre. But Miller's contract has a team option for next year (reasonable number) and the Blazers are hoping to acquire a bit younger player on the hopes of refreshing his career.

This is good for Portland because they don't need their point guard to score big but do need him to shoot from distance and play defense. Devin has played better when playing with a mature team and can be a part of a winning program in Portland. Andre has not worn out his welcome in Portland. He has proven himself a true professional who gets along and makes a team better. He is not the ideal point guard for Coach Nate McMillan's offense or defense but he has been a real asset to his team.

This is good for New Jersey because bringing a veteran point guard into the locker room can pay big dividends for a young team trying to find its way. Andre is a proven passer and scorer. He has no difficulty puttiing up 20 a night (he scored 52 in a win over Dallas in Dallas last year!). He will help the scoring average of every player he plays with. And the reported strained relationship between Harris and the Nets can be allieviated.

Given those sound reasons to make the trade perhaps it does not happen. But for Andre and Devin, for the Blazers and the Nets, perhaps it is a good thing if it does

You have a wonderful sense of humor. As I long suffering fan and Nets season ticket holder, I am a firm believer in the old saying: "If you don't laugh, you cry". Thanks for making me laugh.

Don't like Troy Murphy?

Who cares. He's a huge expiring contract and would provide better temporary production than Przybilla.

And if some reports are true and the trade with the Nets goes through soon the Blazers might make a 2nd trade flipping Murphy to another team trying to shed payroll. If the Blazers want to make a run at it they could flip Murphy for someone like Gerald Wallace to go with Harris, Matthews, Aldridge & Camby. Now you're talking!!

There's nothing wrong with trading for a large expiring contract. Only good comes from that.

getting Andre Miller and joel Przybilla for Devin Harris would be good for the Nets. The Nets need some more front court help and Miller is a proven point guard that has warn out his welcome in Portland. Harris is better served as a role player and is not a star to carry a team. He would just be one of many pieces in portland and not have to be the primary scorer.

I think this would be great for Harris.  He's better when he doesn't have to be a MAIN scorer, like he is now.  He needs to get back to role player status like he was with Dallas.

And for Andre Miller....I just feel bad.  He deserves to be traded to a contender.  I still think he'll retire with a ring though.

As far as trades go, if it IS  Harris for Miller/Przybilla, I think the Nets are getting the better end of the deal.

Bad trade for the Blazers. They'd be giving up way too much for way too little. They're doing as well as they are because of the players they have and how they play together. Miller is a huge part of that. Harris hasn't elevated his team enough to get off the bottom. If the Blazers have to trade, get someone who knows how to win.

I would love to see Devin Harris get out of New Jersey. Portland would be great for him, as he would not be counted on to do a lot of scoring and can get back to his old form.

Interesting......it would definately be better for Harris with his career going forward. Going to a playoff team would be great.
